alex's life book

  • In early 2006, I began creating a life book for my daughter, Alex. Click here for links to articles describing my experience.
  • And for those of you who are more digitally inclined, in late 2006, I recreated key pages of Alex's lifebook for an article I wrote for AlphaMom, using Scrapblog.

You can see the final digital result (and leave comments, if you'd like!) here.

stop with the asking! and the questions! and the asking!

Yellowflower
Beautiful yellow flowers. And I don't even like the colour yellow.

The lovely ladies of BlogHer have asked me to ask you if you would, pretty please, participate in a very short survey. The survey is only (I promise) 1 page long, and asks you simple questions like if you're ever likely to visit Chookooloonks again, that sort of thing. (I don't get to see the answers, for what it's worth.) It's also completely anonymous. Oh, and every question is optional. So, please, with sugar on top, would you mind clicking here (or the link at the top left), and give them your insights? Pretty, pretty please? Come on, all the cool kids are doing it. I'll be your best friend. First hit's free.

In exchange for your wonderful assistance, I thought I'd share something with you that very few people know about me.

Hmmm.

Thing is, I'm such an open book -- what could you possibly not know about me? Let me think...

...oh, here's something: I can count to 10 in German (although I can't write it correctly). When I was about 7 years old, there was a German woman who lived in our village in the south of Trinidad, and she gave German lessons to all the little kids in the neighbourhood. It's the only thing I remember from the classes. That, and how to say "the grass is green."

Actually, now that I think about it (and am clearly in an asking mood anyway), I'd love to know the same thing about you: what's something about you that most people don't know about?

Great question! Hmmm...what don't most people know about me?

I used to run the 100m in 12 seconds. I once was chosen as a finalist in a U.S. national Japanese speech contest. I wanted to be an astronaut....

That shade of Yellow is exactly what I am using to crochet a Prayer Shawl. Someone else paid for the yarn, but it is growing nicer to me.

I always put the sock on my right foot first, then the other sock on the left. I can't remember doing it any other way since Second Grade. Does this mean I should have a diagnosis of OCD?

I took the survey. I hope giving the year of my birth doesn't put a hex on the conference.

hmmm.what don't people know about me?

When I was little my parents had a very active social life....I used to lock myself in the house when I was young and my parents rented every scary movie imaginable for me to watch while they were out...I loved to freak myself out!! The Omen was my absolute favourite!

I am participating in my very first Iron Man in Florida this year...eek!

Guess I'm just a glutton for punishment!

I'm an R.N. and worked in OB 10 years. During that time I ended up delivering a couple dozen babies all by myself when the doctor didn't arrive in time.

Mary

I went to twelve different schools in eleven years. We moved a LOT.

i always wanted to learn how to dance on a pole. i never wanted to be a stripper, but i admire the talent of the really good ones.

this is bordering on TMI, but hey, thats just me!

One thing about me that people who didn't know me as child don't know is that I am very shy. really! I am. Must be why I like internet communication so much :)

I can say "'Twas the night before Christmas" and "I love you for all you have given me" in Norwegian. I took a semester of Norwegian in college ... my parents were horrified.

When I was a teenager my dad put up a trapeze in the house for me!!! All my friends loved it too!

I can name all the "helping verbs". We had to memorize them in 9th grade English. Am, is, are, was, were...

I had my wisdom teeth removed when I was 9 years old...and then again when I was 18.

I don't know how to ride a bike, and as a result I had to have lots of extra tutoring in drivers' ed. because I couldn't figure out how to drive straight. Turning? I could do that. Parallel Parking? I could do that. Staying in my lane on a long straight road? Not so much.

Wow, something that people don't know about me. I wanted to be a Marine Biologist as a kid, and even spent one year in college studying that, only to come home and major in something else. So much for training/swimming with dolphins.

On the language thing, I took three years of college Latin and can recite some poetry from memory.

I think that's enough.

I can't parallel park to save my life, I almost flunked my driving test because of it.

I've had Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll memorized since the 6th grade. I tend to use the section of the father rejoicing when I'm excited - "Oh frabjous day! Calloo! Callay!" - and I completely freak people out since they don't know what the heck I'm talking about.

I'm 32 years old and still suck my thumb to get to sleep at night.

That corned beef is my favorite food ever.

I can count to ten in Turkish. Also, I think Tsavorites are bad luck.

I can recite a list of German prepositions that take the Dative or the Accusative (an auf hinter in neben über unter vor zwischen) and the ones which always take the Dative (aus ausser bei mit nach seit von zu). I don't remember enough vocabulary anymore to use them in a proper German sentence, but I remember those words.

And I like to bang on the desk with a ruler when I say them, just like old times. ;-)

I played the clarinet and flute in high school band (not very well, but I did love band).

I can sew. Not just sew, but SEW. I'm talking wedding dress sewing. And sewing with no pattern sewing. My ex-stepmother made me learn at about 12 years old. By the time I was 24, I had made more than a few wedding dresses and prom dresses, among other things.

Also, I have my cosmetology license.

My feet are cold right now. Bet ya didn't know that!

Took the survey for you, darling!

I did almost all the wiring of my house with no prior experience, learning as I went. And it didn't burn down! And all the lights and outlets work! Holy crap!

I can count to a 999,999 in German because I can't remember the word for million. I think it's billione but I'm not certain of that. 11 and 12 are my favorite numbers in German. That, the alphabet, and the conjugation of "I am" are all I retained from two semesters of it in college. Most people don't know I even took German. (I can help you learn to write it if you want)

I once interviewed Cool and the Gang for a Dutch radio station when I was 14.

I worked on a rather exclusive (read expensive) cruise ship for several years and met celebrities like Heather Locklear and her (then) husband Tommy Lee Jones, Dick van Dyke, Ernest Borgnine and his wife Tova and former president Mr. Gerald Ford.

I also speak Dutch, English, Spanish, French, German and a couple of words in Swahili, but have been painfully lazy when it comes to bringing my 2 year old up bilingually (at the very least!).

I can do the movements to "Keep Christmas With You" from the classic television special "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street."

Other than that, there's nothing specially secret about me.

When I was in second grade I told everyone I wanted to be a nun when I grew up! We weren't even Catholic... I thought it would be just like the Sound of Music version of a nunnery--singing and praying all day. Now as I sit in a cubicle all day, I'm thinking twice about that vow of poverty and chastity. It just might be worth it!
