alex's life book

  • In early 2006, I began creating a life book for my daughter, Alex. Click here for links to articles describing my experience.
  • And for those of you who are more digitally inclined, in late 2006, I recreated key pages of Alex's lifebook for an article I wrote for AlphaMom, using Scrapblog.

You can see the final digital result (and leave comments, if you'd like!) here.

whistler to vancouver

He made it. He returned from the mountain alive, and I'm breathing again. Of course, returning alive and in one piece doesn't make for great blog fodder, so remind me one day to tell you the story of how Marcus almost killed himself riding a bike in Houston, soon after we married. It will explain why (a) I'm paranoid about his riding, and (b) I harbour a certain amount of bitterness about life in general. It's a good story. You'll laugh. You'll cry. It'll become a part of you.

ANYway.

So we're back in Vancouver. On the way back, we decided to take the advice of Anthony, who left a comment on this post, suggesting that we stop at some of the scenic spots on the drive between Whistler and Vancouver. I'll tell you now that I'm not particularly good at photographing scenery -- that's Marcus' strength, portraits are more my bag -- but I did my best trying to capture some of the beauty that is British Columbia.

Enjoy.

Glad he survived! Looking forward to the Houston bike story.

Lovely scenery pics. You just might be able to add that to your resume.

Breathtaking!

Wow! I think I may have to make a trip to B.C.-it's absolutely stunning!

PS: Glad to hear Marcus is in one piece.

Glad to hear he made it down in one piece! I've skied that mountain, and cannot imagine coming down it on my bike.

Isn't it beautiful there? My dad has a house in Squamish and I think it may be the most beautiful part of the world I've ever seen. And oh, the FOOD! I ate my heart out when I was out there last. Glad you enjoyed it.

I have no idea how I found your blog but glad I did. Your photos are stunning.

I am a first generation American and my parents moved back to St. Martin two years ago. Living in Los Angeles I feel very disconnected from the islands. Love reading your blog. It makes me a little homesick but that is okay.

Oh, yes...pretty tough to take a bad picture with subject like the scenery of BC. That is why I love that part of this continent (BC & Wash & Oregon) so much.

*sigh* I miss it so...

I'm so glad you enjoyed your visit to Vancouver and Whistler. I live here and love it so much that I decided to work in tourism. Your photos are gorgeous and your blog is a joy to read. I have sorta cousins who live in Trinidad so I've been enjoying your posts. Found your site via the BlogHer website.

stop kidding around. those are postcards you bought.

or they should be. you have talent, girl. in all kinds of photography. don't doubt it!

karen,

i found your blog through blogher & have eagerly read the past month's worth of entries! your daughter is adorable, as are all of your photographs.

my husband & i went to whistler/vancouver for our honeymoon last summer & loved every minute of it. your pictures are making me "honeymoonsick."

i love your writing & will be visiting your site more frequently!

as a sidenote, i am adopted & plan to adopt my own childern. i greatly enjoy finding another advocate of adoption.

Those are stunning. What kind of camera do you use?

(Found you via Kristin, you're now on my blogroll!)

Those photos really make me miss all the summers I spent as a kid on the Columbia Gorge at my relatives' houses. If you ever get the chance to go there, it is spectacular - from Multnomah Falls to Bridge Of The Gods to all the falls along the highway (Bridal Veil, Horsetail, Oneonta, etc.). It's about a 45 minute drive east of Portland, right along the Columbia River. Also, if you go north-east of there to Goldendale, you should visit the Maryhill Museum. This place is awesome and full of artifacts and interesting stuff (even as a kid, I was in love with the Czarina of Russia's inauguration dress and wanted one of my own, daddy! (Kidding LOL)). About a 1/4 mile away from the museum is a replica of Stonehenge, which is sorta funky, being in the middle of nowhere and in the dry, arid area of Washington. Thanks for the photos! Enjoy your travels!

not good at landscape photography? says who?
great shots, and i can't wait for the "how marcus almost got killed on his bike story" b/c well...i'm curious like that. Have a ball at BlogHer!

Is there anything you can't do?

Beautiful pictures. I would have cut the top off the mountain somehow.

Ann

... and I am fortunate enough to have the personal tour of these sitting next to the artist in the wifi Portland Airport :)
You have inspired me to create: your photographs move me; they truly capture that blip in time that puts the viewer THERE. Lighting: you see it, you've got it babe!
Brilliant to have met you, I look forward to staying in touch and getting to know you and your beautiful family.
