alex's life book

  • In early 2006, I began creating a life book for my daughter, Alex. Click here for links to articles describing my experience.
  • And for those of you who are more digitally inclined, in late 2006, I recreated key pages of Alex's lifebook for an article I wrote for AlphaMom, using Scrapblog.

You can see the final digital result (and leave comments, if you'd like!) here.

do you know what the secret of life is?

Curly

The image above was taken from our television set this afternoon, as we watched City Slickers. I love this movie.

My favourite part is when Curly tells Mitch that the secret of life is "one thing" -- the trick is to figure out what that one thing is for you.

Even though I suspect Curly's right, I'm not sure I've figured out what the secret of life is. I mean, I know that Marcus and Alex are the most important people in my life, and they take priority over everything ... but is that the "secret of life"? Or is there something more?

On that note, I'm off to make oatmeal raisin cookies with Alex. In the meantime, tell me: what's your secret of life?

I don't know if I know my "one thing." I do know that baking is near and very dear to my heart and I love me a good oatmeal-raisin cookie!!

faith. even my faltering hold on it.

Figuring out how to enjoy the now, while the now is here.

Funnily enough, at the beginning of the new year, we're starting a new series on our blog which contains movies that I've never seen that Josh thinks I'm a mutant for never seeing. This is one of them.

Oh, that rock I lived under sure was comfy. :)

being a curmudgeonly sort...to not confuse looking happy with being happy.

I deal with a lot of people who tell me that if I just wasn't so "negative" all the time, I'd be happy.

"But I am happy"

"You can't be, you don't act happy"

what's up with that? Looking happy now counts more than being happy?

Finding forgiveness.

My secret of life is to stop looking for a secret to life and to live my life, instead. I spent most of my early adulthood believing in a divine plan/purpose, and now that reality has smacked me over the head with an anvil, I am spending years unraveling my mind from the misconceptions I've lived under for years. Those were years I could have just spend living, and they were wasted. Never. Again.

My favorite line is when one of the slickers asks Curly, "Hey Curly, you killed anybody today?" And Curly fixes him with a curmudgeonly stare and intones, "Day ain't over yet."

Hope. That's my one thing. It makes good times gooder and bad times bearable and promises that things can change. Yum Cookies!!
