Really good topic. My kids are 6, 5 & 5 and we rarely watch any adult programming in the house. But sometimes I think they are missing out not seeing the news in general. I grew up watching it and think it helped me see how much bigger the world around me was, how lucky I was, but am still not sure how much is appropriate for my own kids.
My parents didn't 'shield' us from the news or taboo topics or family secrets and hush-hushes...so I don't do it with my 3 & 4 yr old boys...they watch TV WITH us...not away from us...we can answer their questions and open the dialogue...the recent tragedies and sensationalized headlines actually gives us opportunities for teaching moments....the C Brown incident gave us an opportunity to talk about not hitting people...Haiti defined for them what an earthquake was and how we can give to little boys and girls who lost their schools...Daddy loves golf, so does Tiger Woods...hey, we can teach the more age-appropriate message that the story brings to us...
