Stood staring at our house today with a mixture of gratitude and guilt. Gratitude that we’re home; guilt that there are so many who were affected by #HurricaneHarvey who aren’t. Why am I now okay, and they’re still not? Will there be another disaster that will instantly cause us to lose everything we’ve now rebuilt?

As my friend @brenebrown once said to me, I no longer have the luxury of obliviously believing that life can’t change in an instant. I may have intellectually believed this before, but I don’t know that I viscerally believed it. I now know better.

And so, I am also thinking nonstop of the people of Christchurch, New Zealand, and the faithful who were in their house of worship, praying, when all hell broke loose because of an act of white supremacist terrorism. I’m thinking of those who lost their lives, but I’m especially thinking of their families, the injured, the survivors, their sense of safety and normalcy shattered in an instant. My experience isn’t the same - it’s far easier to forgive an act of nature - but I understand something of the shock, the numbness, the despair, and the fear. I know that it’s awful, and I know that it’s pervasive, I know that it can last long after the world goes back to its normal and weirdly, when you eventually make it through to the other side, there’s guilt.

Trauma is a helluva thing.

First springlike weather in a while calls for dinner outside - back to the ice house/restaurant where we ate often right after #HurricaneHarvey, when we were taking refuge in our sweet friend @aimeewoodall’s garage apartment. Seems like just yesterday. Seems like a lifetime ago. (I told them to look like they’re interested in each other, and @marzjennings made that face. I have no idea.) ✨✨✨ #makelight

When the daughter of one of your dearest friends becomes dear friends with your own daughter, and one day she surprises you on Instagram with a sketch she did of your daughter, you force her to sell it to you, frame it, and hang it in a place of honour in your office. @mirabaidornfest, I cannot thank you enough for sharing your beautiful artistic gift with me. I will treasure this always. ✨❤️✨❤️✨
