When Alex was little, instead of giving her loose sheets of paper to draw in, I’d buy her journals. I admit the main reason was because it was a tidier way to keep her doodles together, but it had the side effect of giving her a more permanent way of monitoring her own progress. She’s in high school now, and is starting to think about what kinds of things she’d like to study in college. She’s not sure yet, but it will likely be in the arts - architecture, maybe, or graphic design, since she loves and shows some talent in art. Because her school is tiny, they don’t have much of an arts program, so Marcus and I enrolled her in a drawing and painting class at the Glassel Junior School at the @mfahouston. She’s loving the classes, and every week I get to wait for her in the school’s brand new facility, with its incredible atrium, surrounded by sketch artists and painters practicing their crafts. It’s spaces and times like this that make me want to create more. May we all carve out more times and opportunities to be inspired to #makelight by making art. It might be the only thing that saves the world. ✨✨✨
Friends, I'm so thrilled to introduce you to my friend Kim. We met four years ago when I was invited to photograph a youth trip to Costa Rica -- Kim was responsible for all of the kids, including acting as event planner, coordinator and mentor for the trip. Since then, she has become a rock star digital strategist and a badass event coordinator, specializing in leading meaningful travel for individuals and groups. She's also one of the cofounders (along with her love, Kevin) of @JourneyandPlay, a website that's all about destination adventure. And the best part? She's now also working with ME! Kim will be helping coordinate my speaking opportunities, upcoming online courses, and as we grow, future Chookooloonks retreats (gasp!) and I can't tell you how lucky I feel to have her on my team. So here's a funny thing that happened over the weekend. In the morning, before the kids arrived at the @Dove Girls Empowerment Summit, there were tons of adults there -- educators, members of the press, ad agencies, that sort of thing. And there was a young woman there wearing this AH MAY ZING dress. Really, it's a dream dress. So I approached her. "Hey -- your dress is fantastic. Who's the designer? She goes, “It’s a designer called Tome. It’s great, right? But it’s pricey.” So I look up the designer on my phone, and some research indicates the dress is EXPENSIVE. WAAAAAAAAAY more than I have EVER paid for a dress, save my wedding dress. So I'm like, "oh HELL no." So she goes, “Well, since you seem pretty serious, I need to come clean - it’s actually Rent The Runway. They’ve just started a subscription model, and I pay a monthly fee, and they send me clothes every month. I wear them, and then send them back, and if I decide I want to keep something, I can buy it at a discount.” So I’m like, “Oh that’s COOL.” She goes, “Yeah, so if I wanted this dress, it would cost me ...” she looks it up, and shows me that it's more than 50% off the retail price. So I say, "Man, that's a helluva price. Are you gonna get it?“ She goes, “No, I’m sending it back.” I respond: "You're nuts. I’d totally get it." AND THEN SHE GOES: “Well, I could buy it, and you could buy it from me ...” FRIENDS, WE DID THIS DEAL RIGHT THERE, STANDING IN THAT BIG OL' WAREHOUSE SPACE, ON OUR PHONES. She bought the dress, I PayPal’d her the money, and then at the end of the day, after I had dinner, I Uber’d over to her hotel to pick up the dress she left at the concierge! How hysterical is THAT? The best part? The dress FITS LIKE IT WAS MADE FOR ME. I love it so much. I'm actually planning to wear it to my next speaking gig. And that's the story of the time I BOUGHT A WOMAN'S DRESS RIGHT OFF HER BACK. Consider this fair warning: the same might happen to you if I like what you're wearing.
Just met this fabulous woman, @theessenceof_ . Check out her kickass necklace by @beadsbyaree - it says BLACK! What a beauty. ✨
