The latest in my Trinidadian Folklore necklaces: made from coral, dzi beads (China) and a pendant from West Africa (Ghana), this is my Soucouyant (pronounced "soo-coo-YAH") necklace.

So here's the thing about Trinidadian folklore: much of it is pretty terrifying. These aren't the types of stories you tell small children, unless you want them to never have a decent night's sleep again. The story of the Soucouyant is a case in point: the Soucouyant is a supernatural being who, by day, looks like an old, bent, wizened woman, hobbling about with her cane; but by night, she discards her skin and instead moves through the world as a ball of fire. She's vampiric, sucking the blood of her victims. The only way to get rid of a Soucouyant is to find her discarded skin (usually left at the roots of a tree) and crush it in a mortar pestle with salt. If you do this, then she has no skin to return to and by dawn, she disappears.

See? I told you It was grim.

Still, ever since I he
Happy Pride, y’all.

According to my DNA, I am predominantly West African, Chinese, European and South Asian (Indian), pretty much in that order. This isn’t that unusual in Trinidadians: our people are a “callaloo” of different cultures.

Since I started making these necklaces, I decided that I only wanted to use beads from the Caribbean, Africa, China and India, combining them in a single piece, and using colours inspired by Trinidadian culture and folklore.

I call this coral and jasper piece, with its Tibetan pendant, my La Diablesse necklace. I’ll wear it whenever I need to fight the patriarchy.

If ya know, ya know.
