« a thought »

Playing with cropping. Photographed with Nikon D300, 60mm micro lens, and Kodak Duaflex.

So, today, as I was catching up on some blog reading, I came across this post by Lilla Rogers Studio, an agency that represents artists and illustrators all over the world. The post was about artist Jillian Phillips, and Lilla asked a question and answered it as follows:

Do you know why Jillian gets so much work?
1. She knows how to inspire herself creatively.
2. She regularly creates tons and tons of work of a high quality.
3. Her work is joyful.
4. She knows the market and what categories sell.
5. She’s a pleasure to work with.
6. Her work is innovative.
7. She knows the market but pushes it further.
8. Her design and color is/are impeccable.

She sounds like a rock star, doesn't she?  Wouldn't it be amazing to have someone describe you the way Lilla described Jillian?

I think I'm going to print this list out, and keep it somewhere I can see it.  Because it seems to me that mastering the first 7 items of this list (since #8 seems most specifically related to art and illustration) might quite possibly be the key to success, no matter what line of work you're in.

I agree. That list would fit so many things we do in life.

"her work is joyful"
maybe b/c sometimes life is hard, we enjoy joyful art...
hmmm... wonder if i could use that in motherhood? :)

Beautiful photos! The intensity of the first one takes my breath away!
And thank you for posting the list of reasons why Jillian Phillips gets so much work. As a (part-time) potter with dreams of pursuing other artistic avenues, I definitely will keep this list handy. Striving to accomplish these things will certainly help make success possible.
As always, thank you for the inspiration.

i am a recently laid off production artist looking to become a freelance graphic designer/photographer and do anything that involves design and creativity. a friend led me to this post saying i would probably like it. she was right. this inspired me. and your idea to print the list out is wonderful! i think i will do the same and hang it by my computer for inspiration and encouragement. thank you.

beautiful photos, by the way!

I love that list and am going to print it out for my inspiration board. Thanks for sharing.

btw -- I have one of your water series framed and hanging in my office. A colleague stopped by and admired it. "Did you take that picture?" she asked, wide-eyed. "No," I said. "Its by an artist in Houston that I really like."

Thought you would get a kick out of that. :)

Love the intense colors here - and that list is worth mulling over. I love the one about "joyful" work.

What a great idea! I'm putting it on my board...omigosh-I'll have to get a board. Meanwhile, the mirror will do. that photograph with blue and purple makes me dreamy and happy.

O...these are gorgeous shots!

to inspire oneself is a lot harder than it seems, at times.
