scenes from the weekend: date night

Last night, Marcus and I had a date night, the first one in months, actually.  I took my camera along, because I knew that the places we were going were dimly lit, and I wanted to try my hand at some low-light images.

Here were my favourites.  For the record, we went to Anvil (known for their insanely inventive cocktails), then to Sparrow restaurant for dinner (owned by the James Beard-nominated chef, Monica Pope, and it appears with this new restaurant she's upped her game even more), and after dinner, we headed over to Mongoose vs. Cobra (a really great space, but honestly, I just love the name).

Hover over each of the photographs for details.

At Anvil. I tried this rum on my life list quest to try 50 different rums.  To be honest, I've lost count what number this is (15, or so, I think?), but nonetheless, it's very good.

Sparrow restaurant.  The shadowy figure on the right of the image is Monica Pope, and she came and talked with us for a long time.  Really lovely woman and ultra-talented chef.

Marcus and I each had a glass of this wine with dinner.  It's a Texas wine, and it rivals any California wine out there.  Believe me, no one is more shocked that I just wrote that last sentence than Marcus and I.

The interior of Mongoose vs. Cobra.  I'm not sure what the space used to be, but it feels like an old firehouse.

These images obviously aren't perfect; it was a real challenge shooting in such dim lighting, but a fun challenge, nonetheless.  Also, the night was sort of an early Valentine's Day celebration for Marcus and me, and it was an awesome evening -- if you're ever in Houston, I strongly recommend visiting all of these venues.

The evening also felt like a last hurrah for a while:  I've officially started working on my second book!  I'll share more when it feels more concrete, for sure, but in the meantime, please wish me luck that the words and images come easily.

More soon, friends.

Song:  Little L by Jamiroquai.  Whenever Marcus and I have date night, we invariably have Jamiroquai playing on the car stereo, so listening to this song will give you an idea of what our date nights usually feel like.  That said, we're still not sure what the lyric, "You make me love you, love you, baby, with a little L" actually means.
