« cooling off »

Discovery Green, July 2, 2009.  Photographed with Nikon D300, 75-200mm lens.

We took the girls to play in the fountains at Discovery Green in downtown Houston last week.

They had a whale of a time.

Jo, Peter and Charlie are now officially off on the next leg of their holiday, and Marcus, Alex and I are about to start our own Chookooloonks Excellent Adventure.  Stay tuned.  In the meantime, I'll invite you to check out the latest Momversation, where we talked about favourite books -- I've left a list of my favourites for your summer reading list.  Please feel free to leave your recommendations -- I'm always looking for a new, good read.

SongWade in the water, as performed by Eva Cassidy.  Love this version.

I love that version of Wade in the Water, thanks so much for the tip. Cooling off in fountains seems a long way from our wintry efforts to get the home fires cranking here but the photos are gorgeous. Have a wonderful adventure!

1. these photographs are amazing, karen. amazing.

2. loved your song for the day, wade in the water. every time I hear that song or see it mentioned, I immediately feel all shiny and happy because I think about the first time I saw the ailey company perform revelations and oh, that beautiful beautiful section with wade and the water. that performance changed my life. I was 18.

3. I've read to kill a mocking bird too many times to mention. truly life-changing. recommending (if you haven't already read them yet): the good earth (pearl s. buck) and a tree grows in brooklyn (betty smith). classics I've read over and over. song of solomon (toni morrison) and white oleander (janet fitch). both amazing. lastly, slaves of new york by tama janowitz. there's just something about that book that I really really love.

These photos are stunning - and make me wish I could join them! Summer in Abilene isn't as humid as summer in Houston, but it's just as hot!

the close-up of Alex smiling is gorgeous. that's something I have to add to my vacation todos, play in city fountains. :)

These are great to look at on a hot summer's day. I love that you can almost feel the water. I will check out the book list (I eat books) and enjoy your trip!
