« view 25: rainy day weather (perfect for thinking about superpowers and the year ahead) »

I find myself so conflicted this time of year. On one hand, I truly hate making New Year's Resolutions -- they just seem like recipes for disappointment. I mean, really, how many times am I going to make the work-out-every-day-lose-25-pounds-in-two-months resolution before I realize that I just don't like exercise enough to make that happen?
On the other hand, I do love a good goal, and find that setting them makes me far more productive than otherwise.
So.
What to do, what to do.

As I was mulling over my thoughts on the subject, I found myself thinking about all of your superpowers you shared with me this past summer. It seems to me that often our superpowers often coincide with things we generally love to do, things around which we have a lot of passion. Also, remember when we talked about using our superpowers for good, and not evil?
This led me to think that maybe I should make my resolutions around exercising my superpower; moreover, maybe you'd want to do the same, and maybe we could check in with each other over the year -- no pressure, no penalties if we don't do it, just encouragement from each other, weekly inspiration from guest writers, that sort of thing...

...and so, yesterday, in a fit of industriousness, I launched the Superpowers Discussion Forum. There, you can declare your superpower, loud and proud; and in the weeks coming, we can share thoughts with each other on how to best hone our superpower skills. You can come back and visit every week -- or not. You can choose to visit daily, to add your thoughts and ideas to ongoing discussions, or just every once in a while for an occasional shot of inspiration. Whatever works for you.
But in any event, however you choose to use the forum, hopefully you'll be moved to use your superpowers to help make 2010 the best year both you and those around you have ever had.

What do you think? If you're game, let's get started: click over and declare your superpower there.

What a wonderful idea! I'm delighted to know that I will be participating in this forum in 2010!
This is great! I just wrote an entry about resolutions and how I don't really make them. I make up lists of things I'd like to get done, but make no promises. I looked back at last year's list and laughed. Oh...the things I didn't do last year. But then I think of all the things I did do this year and they weren't even on the list! There's a superpower in that somewhere.
That's great idea! I'm also drawn to Christine Kane's 'Word of the Year' (http://christinekane.com/blog/) as an alternative for New Year's Resolutions that turn into to-do lists. I've never done it so I can't personally recommend it, but maybe it's worth checking out?
Wish you a great and superpowerful 2010!
This is such a great idea, Karen! It will be neat to see what kind of community crops up in greater measure around this project.
BTW, is there a way to subscribe to the new posts in the forum? Or will you perhaps be letting us know when it's updated with a new question?
Great question, Christianne. I don't see that there's a way to subscribe, unfortunately, but I plan on updating every Monday with a new prompt, and will announce it on my blog post for that day.
Thanks so much for participating!
K.
I click over here almost daily and today, for some reason, that top photo made me grasp. It literally took my breathe away.
What a wonderful idea... I can't wait to see how this unfolds
I've already decided what my New Year's resolution will be: To answer my cell phone too often.
I very much enjoy the convenience of my voice mail... My clients, however, don't.
A good friend of mine relayed a story to me about how she was speaking with another client of mine who said, "When you call, do you ever get Josh?"
She responded by saying, "You don't call Josh. Josh calls you."
Humorous as it was it was also embarrassing to be so terrible with my telephone communication.
So this year? I will be avoiding my phone less. :-)
You, as usual, are full if inspiration. What wonderful ideas you always have. Happy New Year!
