« random weekend thoughts »

Photographed with Nikon D300, 60mm micro lens.

After 40 days and 40 nights (more or less) of going without meat, it seems I am officially a vegetarian:  I have no desire to return to my formerly omnivorous ways.  I don't even miss seafood, which, if you knew me, is shocking.  I'm trying not to think about the irony around the fact that I can so handily give up an entire cuisine I love, and yet I seem hold on to an extra (and unwanted) 10 pounds like Grim Death.

I've never been a huge fan of roses - in my mind, there are many more beautiful, interesting blossoms.  Still, when Marcus suggested we plant a couple of rose bushes in the back of our garden a couple of years ago, I didn't protest: I assumed that his need for roses was somehow because he's English.  Or something.  Anyway, they're blossoming now, and I took the image above this weekend.  I'm shocked at how much more appealing roses are when you look at them up close.

Like most things, I suppose.

For Easter, Alex asked me to fix her hair all wild and curly.  I did.  When I was finished, she looked at herself in the mirror, and without any emotion, deadpanned: "I look ... like Aslan."

Dude.  She referenced C.S. Lewis.  Words can't express my pride.

Pun, obviously, intended.

Aslan! Love it.

I get it. I live in the "City of Roses." They grow on you.

Congrats! You've gone a while without meat. I commend you! I'm vegan and 80% raw and let me tell you I struggle to this day. It's easier if my entire household was the same. They are not. So, I know personally what you've accomplished. Well Done!

The inside of this rose is extraordinary! Thanks for capturing souch a beauty!

P.S. Alex is such a doll!

OMG, that is the cutest hair I have ever seen in my life. No joke.

I too think that roses, while pretty, are sort of boring. But your photo is spectacular! Maybe I will have to take a closer look next time I head out to the yard ...

I have yet to give up seafood. In Oklahoma you are considered a vegetarian if you eat only veggies, chicken, pork, and seafood. People are surprised when I say "I don't eat chicken". I commend you on being OK with giving up the fish.

I love my roses, they are a lot of work but they give me great pleasure. I have not given up meat but just read an interesting line in Mark Bittman's book, "Food Matters": Vegan until 6:00. An interesting way to approach the day for sure. We eat clean which is working but a challenge nonetheless.
I love Alex's hair .... she looks gorgeous!
